Welcome to the PE Classroom

Welcome!  My name is Susan Thur and I am looking forward to a new and exciting school year.  This is my fourteenth year teaching Physical Education at St. Peter’s School. My goal for PE class is to educate and motivate students to want to stay physically active and make healthy lifestyle choices. Throughout the year we will be working on the health components of flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, muscular endurance and body composition as well as the skill components of agility, balance, power, reaction time, coordination and speed.

 PE Grades

Kindergarten - 4th Grade

100% of grade is based on a 10 point system for each class.

·        4 points Participation

·        4 points Sportsmanship

·        2 points following PE class rules

All 10 points will be recorded under the term participation in the grade book.  Failure to receive all points for each class will generate a comment indicating area of deficiency.

5th Grade

Grading will be according to the 10-point system listed above with the exception of the water safety unit.  Work related to the water safety unit will be counted as 20% of student’s grade in the quarter(s) in which the unit is taught.

6th Grade – 8th Grade

80% of grade is based on the 10-point system listed above.
20% of grade will be based on assessment of skills using observations, verbal/written quizzes, assignments, and projects.

Information regarding our Jumps and Hoops events for the American Heart Association has been distributed to the students.  Our events will run next week during PE classes February 13th-Feb.16th. Collecting donations for the American Heart Association is optional, but the signed permission slip is required to participate in our Jumps and Hoops Events. The permission slip may be found on the collection envelope.  Please detach and return to school as soon as possible.  Any donations made to the American Heart Association may be turned in anytime before February 28th.   Our Jumps Event is open to all students in pre-K through fourth grades.  We will have rope jumping along with many other jumping activities for our younger students who have not yet mastered rope jumping skills. Our Hoops Event is open to students in grades five through eight.  Each class will participate in a 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.  Students will make up their own teams using the format requirements of 1 boy, 1 girl, and the third person can be a boy or girl.

January 27, 2012

Our school will be participating in Jumps and Hoops for American Heart Association the week of February 13th. We participate in this event first and foremost because jumping rope and playing basketball are excellent cardiovascular workouts for our students.  The American Heart Association has offered participation to us in a special promotion for the 2011-2012 school year.  They have challenged us to spread the word about heart disease and stroke through the use of the web pages.  For every 30 students, faculty or friends (neighbors, coworkers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles or grandparents) who send out 15 emails St. Peter’s will be awarded a $100 certificate for PE equipment. This program is based totally on the number of emails sent out, not monetary donations made to the Heart Association.  Please support the Heart Association effort and at the same time support the PE program at St. Peter’s by going to www.heart.org/jumps   (grades PreK-4th) or www.heart.org/hoops  (grades 5-8) and sign up to send out your emails. This site has generic letters you can send or you have the option of creating your own personal letter to send. **Make sure you join the St. Peter’s Waldorf Team.

Spring Sports-Track, Soccer, Softball

We are in the process of scheduling and lining up coaches for our Spring Sports Season. The middle school will have the opportunity to participate in track, soccer and or softball starting in March.  Practices will be held after school for 3:40-5:00pm. The sport practices will be scheduled so that a student may participate in more than one sport.  We look forward to an exciting and competitive season.  If you would like to help with coaching one of our spring sports please email Mrs. Thur at schoolpe@stpeterswaldorf.org.

January 2012

Happy New Year to everyone!  The PE program is expanding to include tennis!!!!!  Beginning this week grades 3-8 will be introduced to their first levels of our tennis program.  This program is sponsored through the National Tennis Association and is very versatile allowing us the capability to teach the program indoors as  well as outdoors.
